Continuing Training: Why it’s Never too Late to Keep Learning
It amazing that some people think that it is too late to stop learning. That mentality is often related to out dated and old fashioned learning situations and study regimes. Here are just some of the reasons that you should continue your training and learning at any stage of life.
- Learn what you love. Maybe you like jewellery or love growing orchids. 30 years ago it was difficult to find specific courses. You will be surprised if you look what you can study and benefit from. Learning does not have to be something tedious and it can just be for pure pleasure.
- Beating age discrimination with ability. Many of us are afraid of losing our position or developing our career during the later stages of our life life. Look at the leaders in many fields of expertise and most of these people have been in their field for decades. It takes time and years of dedication to a profession or skill and adding learning and training to your work environment can lead to a highly specialist field that only someone of older age can possibly have. Some of the most fashionable and vibrant in their field are those who are the oldest. Don’t be out of date and lead your curve.
- Extend your professional field of experience. The more study and training that you complete will increase your range of abilities and professions. Develop supplementary skills to your core professional field. This is an excellent way of setting yourself up with a secondary career. I know of one professional tradesman who had obtained a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment which helped him switch careers from a doer to a teacher. Applying new accreditation to your skills can lead to you into careers and working environments that can often be surprising and more enjoyable.
- Know the accepted norms and practises. Just because you may be very competent in your field your application of your work and your work experience may not be all that it seems. By engaging in study you may find that your own experience is only related to your previous working environment and you are lacking in some basic foundations. Many a freelancer may be skillful when getting work and nailing down those first clients, but what happens if the business dries up? Being able to apply your talent through knowing the normal procedures in industry might just be what you are lacking.
- Staying up to date. Why not be better than the best and have the latest information in your field. Our world is constantly changing and so should we all.
- Studying when you want and how you want. We live in a world greatly different than it was 20 years ago. Flexible study programs have become essential to our modern day lives. Even many of the staid and traditional educational institutions are offering flexible accreditation and education programs. If a standard course is required for employment, such as TAA accreditation for training professionals or CPPSEC for security and crowd control professionals then there already be a credible companies and institutions offering these courses through flexible means.
Learning should be an integral part of your life. If we lose the excitement and joy learning at any stage in life then we need to take a good look at our situation. Learning is something for all ages and with the speed of change and the ease of access there is no better time to study for professional or personal reasons.
